After 15 minutes of reading almost every tomato sauce ingredient label, I finally found a pasta sauce that didn’t have sugar in it…success!! But then I looked at the price…$9.99…what? These people can’t be serious. Do I fork over the $10 for a tomato sauce with minimal ingredients, or do I take the extra time making a sauce at home?
I’ve contemplated this decision many times at the grocery store, trying to decide between buying something quick and easy, but probably bland and high in salt versus making my own.
My husband always said that a good pasta sauce takes several hours to cook down and develop a deep flavor. In that case the store-bought one wins because I don’t have hours. If anything, I’m probably hungry now.
I read the ingredients again on the $10 sauce – tomato puree, olive oil, onion, garlic, basil, salt, citric acid. Pretty simple, basic ingredients. That’s it, decision made; I’m not spending $10 on something that I can make at home for a fraction of the cost.
Now for the time…no way am I cooking something for hours. This is a wonderful quick pasta sauce and I’m in love.
Once in a while, I do catch myself debating over tomato sauce, but I always pull through.
- 1 tsp ghee
- 1/2 large onion
- 6 garlic cloves
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp dried basil
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 6 roma tomatoes or 28oz crushed tomatoes
- Optional: 1lb Sugar-Free Sausage
- Heat the ghee in a pot over medium heat.
- Dice the onion. Add the onions to the pot and sauté for 5 minutes until slightly translucent.
- Add the crushed garlic, sliced mushrooms, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper to the onions and continue cooking for another 5 minutes.
- Quarter the tomatoes and add to the pot.
- Using a wooden spoon, smash some of the tomatoes as you stir and incorporate the juices with the vegetables.
- If desired, add the Sugar-Free Sausage to the tomatoes.
- Cook for 10 minutes stirring occasionally.
- Serve over Zoodles, potatoes or green beans.
- Optional: Garnish with a sprinkle of almond flour.
