This No-Oat Oatmeal is completely paleo, grain-free, sugar-free, and is a great breakfast alternative when you don’t want the typical egg breakfast. This Paleo Oatmeal is simple, fast, and will hold you over until lunch.
Cream of Wheat and Oatmeal Replacement
I created this recipe mostly due to my history eating Cream of Wheat as a little girl.
My brother and I slept in bunk beds when we visited our Dad. I somehow scored the top bunk every time we spent the night. Maybe because I was older or maybe because my brother liked to make a fort in the bottom bunk. He would tuck a blanket under the top mattress and let it fall, completely hiding the bottom bunk. Creating a private, dark hideaway.
Early in the morning, Dad would come in and give us both kisses to gently rouse us from our dreamland. I always tried to wake quickly, prying my eyes open and preparing my body for the day. I didn’t want to miss a minute of the time we’re able to spend with Dad.
Downstairs for breakfast, Dad let us choose what we wanted to eat – sometimes cereal, sometimes scrambled eggs, or Dad’s special French toast, or sometimes, Dad would make us cream of wheat.
I have to admit, I didn’t like cream of wheat at first, but Dad loved it, and he enjoyed making it for us. He would make it the traditional way by boiling the water first.
“The trick is to wait for the water to boil before you add the cream of wheat,” he said as we watched the water begin to simmer.
He never measured, just poured the cream of wheat directly from the box and stirred until he thought it was enough…it always was. He would continue stirring the cream of wheat until it reached the perfect consistency. Finally, he stirred in the milk and sugar, again without measuring, and divided the final mixture among three bowls.
The three of us gathered around the kitchen counter and took turns testing small spoonfuls and passing around the milk and sugar until it was just right. My brother liked his with so much milk it would almost run over the sides. I usually added a touch more sugar and enough milk only to cool it off.
We all sat there around the kitchen counter eating our breakfast and chatting about this and that. It made for a beautiful morning and engraved a special memory in my heart of our breakfasts together.
Now years later, and following a grain-free, Paleo lifestyle, I still recall this memory while making my Paleo version of cream of wheat for breakfast. It truly makes me happy as I pour the buckwheat cereal into the boiling water. Slightly as a remembrance of Dad cooking it for us and the moments we shared around the kitchen counter with Dad, who has since passed, but is still quite alive in my heart.
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup dry creamy buckwheat cereal
- 1/4 cup milk of choice (coconut milk, nut milk, or hemp milk)
- 2 tbsp ground flax seeds
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 serving fruit of choice (See Recipe Notes below)
- Bring the water to a boil in a small pot over medium-high heat. For a mess-free, quick clean-up, cooking method, see the microwave method below.
- Add the cereal and stir continuously until the cereal has thickened to your liking. Keep in mind it will thin some after you add the coconut milk.
- Add the coconut milk, or milk alternative, flax seeds, and cinnamon.
- Garnish with a serving of fruit, a shake of cinnamon. and enjoy.
Variation Microwave Method:
If you’re on short time, or just don’t feel like washing the pot, you can cook the no-oat oatmeal in the microwave. Cook for about 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until the cereal has thickened to your liking.
- Milk Selection: If you have a nut allergy, try using Hemp Milk.
- Fruit: Since this recipe doesn’t have any added sugar, I recommend using a fruit with high, natural sugar content, like bananas, pears, berries, or raisins.
