This Instant Pot Cabbage recipe amazes me every time. In fact, anything that cooks in 10 minutes deserves a gold medal.
I’m not joking either, in 10 minutes, this cabbage is completely tender, falling apart, and ready to eat.
How the Instant Pot Works
The Instant Pot is a kitchen essential!
It’s very versatile as it has many functions – like slow cook, saute, and keep warm – but it’s primarily an electric pressure cooker. Pressure Cookers work in a very simple way…pressure.
The liquid inside the Instant Pot can reach up to 250-degrees! During ordinary, non-pressurized, cooking methods, liquid reaches the boiling point, which is 212-degrees.
By increasing the temperature by 38-degrees, an Instant Pot can complete the cooking four times faster than ordinary boiling.
It’s like magic! I love it.
Most Important Ingredient when Cooking Under Pressure
The most important ingredient, in all Instant Pot recipes, is the liquid.
As I mentioned above, the main reason the Instant Pot is so amazing is it’s ability to bring the liquid temperature to 250-degrees, thus cooking the food four times faster than traditional cooking methods.
- Sugar-Free Broth of Choice
Why not Sauces?
Thick sauces don’t contain enough liquid to vaporize and create pressure inside the Instant Pot. Thick sauces will often burn the food and the inside of the pot, which is never pleasant to clean.
The best option here is to use either water or broth for the cooking, then thicken and season the liquid afterwards to create the sauce.
Spices for Instant Pot Cabbage
In this featured recipe, I season the cabbage with turmeric.
Turmeric has extremely powerful medicinal properties. It’s known for its anti-inflammatory properties and is a very powerful antioxidant.
Turmeric is most often used in curries; however, the flavor pairs well with most vegetables as well.
See “Spicy Cabbage” spices for a different option, below the recipe.

- Cut the cabbage into eighths and place them in your Instant Pot.
- Add the broth, or water if you choose.
- Drizzle the avocado oil over the cabbage and sprinkle with turmeric and salt.
- Cook the cabbage under high pressure for 10 minutes. The timer starts once the pressure cooker reaches high pressure.
- Release the pressure and remove the cabbage.
Simply replace the turmeric with these spices.
