The author, Rachel Hollis, shares her experience in becoming who she was meant to be in this book. How she grew up, how she started a small business, how her personal struggles never defined her, and how she overcame the challenges that life through in her way to become a bestselling author, an in-demand speaker, and someone who makes a difference in the world.
Her running mantra,“You, and only you, are ultimately responsible for who you become and how happy you are,” completely sums up her entire book, which clearly illustrates how we are in the driver’s seat of our life.
She breaks down the 20 different lies (chapters) we get trapped in and details how she – very personally – dealt with those lies.
My most favorite, and the ones I see most often as a Holistic Health Coach, are:
- I’ll start over tomorrow
- I’m not good enough
- I’m a bad mom
- I should be further along by now
- I need to make myself smaller
- I’m defined by my weight
- I need a drink
Her personal accounts are absolutely amazing, emotional, and totally relatable.
However, once she explains the lie, she completes each chapter with a description of how she overcame each obstacle, to finally become who she was meant to be.
She is willing to share her private accounts in efforts that you can find similarity and overcome your lies as well.
Overall, I can honestly say every chapter, or better yet, every other page had me either laughing, crying or obsessively highlighting.

Keep your promises
“If you constantly make and break promises to yourself, you’re not making promises at all.”
I see this happening for a lot of my Health Coaching clients.
People break promises with themselves all the time. They either give up on themselves, or more common, put others and their needs before their own.
Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. So, start making…AND KEEPING…those promises to yourself and priority #1.
Life Happens For You
“What if life isn’t happening to you?…What if all of it is happening for you?”
This one is powerful and works with your inner beliefs. As a Health Coach, it’s amazing what a simple statement can do for people. Adding this mantra into your life can completely change how you view the world.
As you know, life may throw terrible things your way, but you have the choice to accept them, learn from them, grow from them, and overcome them.
Remember, these situations happen FOR you, and make you a better, stronger, more capable human!
However, this is always your decision to make.
“You do not have permission to quit!”
Finally, the last tidbit I’ll share with you is this gem. I couldn’t have said it better – you do not have permission to quit.
Once quitting is off the table, the option is always to move forward. I don’t care if you’re moving forward at 1-mph as long as you’re moving forward.
There’s a reason – a higher purpose – in this life and that’s what I’m constantly moving towards.
Quitting is not an option!
This book is amazing!
I learned so much about myself and about the typical struggles of women.
It finally sets the record straight…we are in total, and complete, control of our lives, our emotions, and our reactions.
We can be upset for a little bit, then we gotta get up, wash our face, and get back in the ring!
