Eating Healthy while Dining Out

Just because you are changing your diet and eating healthy, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy dining at a restaurant.  Once you know the right foods and the right questions, you will be able to enjoy dining out stress free.  After doing this for over a year now, I have learned some great tips and tricks that will help you along the way.

Breakfast

Omelets

  • Ask for shelled eggs so they won’t use egg substitutes or fillers
  • Ask for the omelet to be cooked with olive oil or cooking spray
  • I like to ask for extra vegetables, which helps fill me up and feel satisfied
  • Be cautious with sauces or salsas; they might contain dairy, sugar, flour or starch.  I usually just use Tabasco for that extra kick

Side Items

Replace typical Carbohydrates with these items.  Some restaurants charge a small fee to sub these items, but your health is well worth the bucks.

  • Fruit
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Steamed vegetables

Additional Information

  • Poached eggs will ensure no oil, dairy, or spices will be used.
  • Ask for hash browns to be cooked on the flat top grill “dry” or with an olive oil spray.
  • If ordering meat, stick with unprocessed meats like pork chops or steak.

Lunch and Dinner

Protein

  • Try to find a grilled option
  • Be cautious with sauces; they might contain dairy, sugar, flour or starch

Side Items

Replace typical Carbohydrates with these items.  Some restaurants charge a small fee to sub these items, but your health is well worth the bucks.

  • Seasonal vegetables cooked in olive oil
  • Baked sweet potato
  • Baked potato; try it topped with green onions, avocado and olive oil
  • Side salad

Additional Information

  • Order tacos wrapped with lettuce instead of tortillas.
  • Order a burger “Protein Style,” without the bun.
  • A lot of restaurants now offer “Paleo” or “Gluten Free” items so be sure to scan the whole menu.

I hope this list helps you make healthy, smart decisions while dining out.
