Eating Healthy while Dining Out

Just because you are changing your diet and eating healthy, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy dining at a restaurant.  Once you know the right foods and the right questions, you will be able to enjoy dining out stress free.

Breakfast

Omelets

  • Ask for shelled eggs so they won’t use egg substitutes or fillers.
  • Ask for the omelet to be cooked with olive oil.
  • Opt for extra vegetables to help keep you full and satisfied.
  • Spice with Tabasco.  Salsa and Sauces may contain dairy, sugar, flour, or starch.

Side Items

Replace typical carbohydrates with these items.  Some restaurants charge a small fee to sub these items, but your health is well worth the extra buck.

  • Fruit
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Steamed vegetables

Additional Tips

  • Poached eggs are the cleanest egg option since they are boiled without any oil, dairy, or spices.
  • Request hash browns to be cooked “dry” or with olive oil.
  • Choose unprocessed meats like pork chops or steak instead of sausage or bacon, which are loaded with nitrates, sugar, and other unnatural ingredients.

Lunch and Dinner

Protein

  • Grilled protein is best.
  • Avoid sauces; they may contain dairy, sugar, flour, or starch.
  • Ask if the protein has been marinated.

Some restaurants will marinate meat ahead of time, which helps to hold moisture in during the cooking process.  Sadly, lots of sugar is use in most marinades.

Side Items

Replace typical carbohydrates with these items.  Some restaurants charge a small fee to sub these items, but your health is well worth the extra buck.

  • Seasonal vegetables steamed or cooked in olive oil
  • Baked sweet potato
  • Baked potato; try it topped with green onions, avocado and olive oil
  • Side salad
  • Fruit

Additional Tips

  • Order tacos wrapped with lettuce instead of tortillas.
  • Order a bun-less burger – “Protein Style.”
  • Look for “Paleo” or “Gluten Free” labels.

I hope this list helps you make healthy, smart decisions while dining out.
